THE MAKING OF A WRITER

You can read my review of The Fugitive by Massimo Carlotto at: http://www.eurocrime.co.uk/reviews/The_Fugitive.html

It is story of his time on the run and in prison, and was the first book written after he recieved a presidential pardon.

Your review seemed surprisingly lighthearted for a story with such grim subject matter. You mentioned that Carlotto's sense of humor must have helped him through his ordeal. Is this book less grim that his novels?

The book is not quite as grim reading as his novels. You know that eventually despite all the traumas it will turn out alright in the end. But perhaps his ability to look back at really desperate situations and find something to laugh at struck a chord. It is a rare book that can make you laugh and cry on the same page and Carlotto achieves this feat.

Uriah - my review is (I hope!) waiting in maxine's inbox (many belated thanks for passing your copy on to me). I fully agree about the tragi-comic aspects. I feel that Carlotto displays remarkably little self-pity given the situation!

Dear Uriah Robinson,

I didn't see an "email me" link on your blog, so I've posted a comment in hopes of getting in touch with you. We have just launched a new website, Dust Jacket Review (at dustjacketreview.com), an online space for users to shelve, share and review books.

As we're just starting out, we're hard up for good, smart content. The crime fiction blogger Rhian from itsacrime.typepad.com (who will be submitting his reviews to Dust Jacket Review) pushed us your way. Looking through your blog Crime Scraps, I think you'd be an ideal user for the site. We're looking for people who can write insightful commentary about books they've read, and who can also appreciate the personal, experiential side of appreciating art, and write about that as well.

We would love to publish your archived reviews, or, if you're interested, have your work feed directly into our network. Your authorship would always be acknowledged, of course, and any review you write would be directly back-linked to your blog through our ProBadge, a site feature especially designed for professional reviewers like you.

I hope to hear from you soon. We'd love to work with you.

All the best,

Steve Dolph

Thanks laurar. Carlotto seems to have the ability to look back and dissociate himself from the events he lived through. If he could not he would be probably be just overwhelmed by self pity.
