RESEMBLING JANE AUSTEN

Today's Guardian was concerned that Hollywood had glamourised Jane Austen in the new film Becoming Jane.

In 1931 the subsequent executive director of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Margaret Herrick, came up with the name for the statuettes that they awarded, when she exclaimed that it resembled her Uncle Oscar.
And the crime fiction connection is that the 2007 Oscar for best actress went to Detective Chief Inspector Jane Tennison aka Ilyena Lydia Mironoff, aka Helen Mirren, for her portrayal of our Queen.

I found the link on Austen in the Guardian. Great comment from "CommanderKeen" I thought: "If my girlfriend is going to drag me to a interminably dull period drama it had better be one with decent looking actresses so I can get some pleasure from the experience."
Same for a Mr Darcy in my neck of the woods! (Firth's career point IMHO! Nothing better since. Which begs the question: why all the remakes and so quickly?)

We are off to a free cinema club preview of Becoming Jane later this week. Funny I had to go on my own to the last free preview, Criminale Romanzo.

Aw, c'mon, Hollywood glamorizing a historical figure? Next you'll be telling me that Queen Christina of Sweden really did not look like Greta Garbo.

Or Cleopatra not like Elizabeth Taylor?
There must be scope here for a series of posts comparing the real life with the Hollywood revamp.
We can be thankful they did not get Kevin Costner to play Trueman Capote.
